Quick Overview
Currently, the economy of Cyprus is booming, and they have the third-highest standard of living in the Mediterranean. It is one of the most popular spots for weddings (often listed as the number one spot in Europe) and honeymoons (number three). Tourism has become a major industry. Unfortunately, traditional views, especially about women, sometimes die hard, so in 2001 Cyprus was second after Portugal, on a list of worst women's pay discrimination in Europe. There is, however a movement for peace and reunification by women, known as Hands Across the Divide (Amanda and Kate, see? I'm still paying attention).
Cyprus is cut along the northern coastline with a 100km-long mountain range, the Kyrenia (Girne) Range, below which is the huge Mesaoria (Mesarya) plain, with the divided capital in the middle of it. Along the southern coast is Troodos Massif range, which includes the famous Mt. Olympus.
Although most known as an area for fantastic birdwatching, Cyprus also has a number of small mammals, including foxes, hedgehogs, bats, hares, the endangered wild sheep and the also endangered monk seal. Although lizards run rampant, Cyprus's three venomous snakes are very rare.
Keep checking back, as I may be adding more pages (Such as one for food!) as I learn more.
